United We Stand: Divided We Fall or Unity is Strength

United We Stand: Divided We Fall or Unity is Strength

Points: Introduction – Unity is strength – The story of the old farmer – The case of a foot-ball team – Conclusion.

Unity is a great quality of human beings. By this is meant the accord of different minds for a common end. There can be no concert if the different persons with their musical instruments are not of the same mind. If they play on their instruments as they like, there will be only chaos and confusion but no harmony.

As in the case of the musical instruments, so in the case of all other affairs, unity of purpose is indispensably necessary. This alone enables us to produce a result conducive to the common good.

So no single person can do what is to be done by several persons unitedly. In other words, the real strength lies in unity. A nation, whose citizens are united, is strong. A family, whose members are united, is strong. A team whose players are in combination with one another, is strong.

As unity is strength, so disunity is weakness. No nation can continue as a free and independent one if its citizens are not united. In the First and Second Great Wars, Germany in spite of its great might, could not smash British because the English people were united. We lost our independence in the battle-field of Plessey, because we wore not united. In the September War (1965) with India, the name of Pakistan would have been obliterated from the map if we were not united to save our independence. This shows that in the case of a nation, unity is strength and disunity is weakness.

The same principle is applicable to the case of a family. If all its members are united and work for its good, they prosper. But if they are selfish and have no unity of purpose, its condition worsens. So in the case of a family, its strength lie in the unity of its members, but if they are not united, it goes to ruin.

In this connection the story of the old farmer and his quarrelling sons is very instructive. So long as the sticks were united in the bundle, none of the old man’s sons could break them. But when the bundle was untied and the separated sticks were given to his sons, they could break them very easily. By this example the old man taught his sons that unity is strength. Nobody can do us any harm so long as we are united. But when we are disunited, misfortune befalls us.

The point will be quite clear if we consider the case of a foot-ball team. Its strength lies in its combination. If the players subordinate in their, interests to the good of the team, they win. But if, on the contrary, they have no unity of purpose and everyone of them plays as he pleases, their team is bound to be defeated.

In this way we may see that in every sphere of human life, strength lies in unity and disunity leads to disaster and ruin.
